Education in America : A Public Right Gone Wrong?

During the first half of the 20th century, the public education system in the United States was the best in the world. Along with private education institutions, we surpassed all others in the quality of our graduates. But something happened. Today we have one of the worst education systems in the world. Who’s to blame? Can we return to the days when parents seldom had to worry about the quality of education a child was receiving? Can we return by altering the system – more pay for teachers, smaller class sizes, national standards, as the unions and administrators keep telling us, or will it take a major overhaul and perhaps even an abandonment of some aspects of the concept of public education? Can technology and the information age rescue us? Are vouchers or charter schools the answer? In other words: “What went wrong, and what can we do about it?”
